A New Twist
Last year was the year of assemblages with metallic twists for me. In 2007 I put hundreds of hours into creating dozens of assemblages on canvas using yards and yards of wire and metal mesh. I put my years of jewelry-making experience to work as I incorporated gems, pearls and glass beading into several of my pieces. I'm revving up to make more pieces with those materials, but I'm itching to spend more time with the great materials found in nature in 2008. So many excitingly textured materials are made by animals, insects and plants, and I can't wait to mix and match them with the other treasures slowly taking over my studio. I'll be writing more about my new pieces, the art workshops I lead at the Ground Zero Teen Center, and other random musings on art on my Web site, www.lauragrey.com, throughout the year. You'll find my artist's statements there, and links to my online galleries of drawings, paintings and, especially, assemblages. Drop by any time.
